Rooted in ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½â€™s commitment to knowledge, social justice, and collaborative service, the Ph.D. in Counseling offers a mission-driven, experiential pathway for emerging counselor scholars. Students engage in counseling, clinical supervision, research, teaching, leadership, and advocacy, with a signature focus on marital, couples, and family counseling.

Guided by a scientist-practitioner model, students build critical thinking through rigorous coursework and clinical training at the CARE Center and community partner sites. Within these settings, they develop advanced, research-supported competencies that promote client well-being.

Through internships in teaching, supervision and advocacy and leadership, students design curriculum, deliver instruction, lead community initiatives, train and supervise masters students, and advance equity and systemic change.

Graduates emerge as reflective scholars and socially responsible leaders who elevate the counseling profession through knowledge-based inquiry and best practice innovation. They are prepared to serve individuals, families, and communities with compassion, integrity, and excellence—fully embodying the values that define ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½.

After completing core and specialization coursework, Ph.D. in Counseling students begin CACREP-accredited practicum and internship experiences at the CARE Center, specialized counseling sites, and community organizations. Students gain advanced, hands-on training in evidence-based and emerging counseling practices, including live supervision, face-to-face clinical work, and opportunities to serve as clinicians-in-training and supervisors for master’s students. Following Advanced Practicum, students complete internships in supervision, teaching, and leadership/advocacy.
